'Big Time Adolescence' reviews: Pete Davidson earns high praise for movie shot in Syracuse "Saturday Night Live" star Pete Davidson is earning high praise for his performance in a new movie that was filmed in Central New York. Big Time Adolescence " had its world premiere at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival on Monday, competing with 16 other films for best U. S. drama. The movie was shot last summer around Syracuse through the Liverpool-based production company American High. Written and directed by Jason Orley, Big Time Adolescence" stars Davidson as a charismatic college dropout who corrupts a 16-year-old virgin ( American Vandal" actor Griffin Gluck) with a growth hormone deficiency. Davidson also serves as an executive producer. Early reviews call the movie a standard, paint-by-the-numbers coming-of-age story, but critics loved Davidson's performance. The Daily Beast predicts it will make the comedian "a bona fide movie star. it's Davidson who steals and carries the film" and The Playlist says "Pete Davidson is all you'll really remember when you leave the theater. And for many, that'll be enough. Variety and The Hollywood Reporter both compared Davidson's character to Matthew McConaughey's iconic performance as Wooderson in "Dazed & Confused. " An IMDb staffer said the movie was reminiscent of John Hughes with Davidson's character feeling "like a sad, future version of Ferris Bueller. Davidson, as always, gets you chuckling at the blasé bluntness of his punk self-absorption; he gives a blithely honed and stylish youth-sociopath performance. Variety wrote. (Davidson himself admitted to the Los Angeles Times that his character was pretty similar to himself. The film's cast also includes Colson Baker (better known as rapper Machine Gun Kelly) Syndey Sweeney ( The Handmaid's Tale. Emily Arlook ( Grown-ish. Thomas Barbusca ( The Mick. Oona Lawrence ( Pete's Dragon. and Jon Cryer ( Pretty in Pink. Two and a Half Men. Cryer told THR that he loved doing the movie because he got to punch Davidson in the face. Hollywood filmmaker Jeremy Garelick ( The Wedding Ringer. The Hangover" launched American High last year when he bought the former A. V. Zogg Middle School in Liverpool, N. Y., to film more John Hughes-esque movies set in high schools and launch a film school. "Big Time Adolescence" is the third of four productions so far to shoot scenes at the school, now known as Syracuse Studios. Davidson has repeatedly criticized Syracuse, calling the city "trash" in a Howard Stern interview and recently claiming that local police targeted him during the film production. "It sucked. The whole town of Syracuse blows. the 25-year-old comedian told Variety on Monday. “To be honest, they just found out I was there and tried to arrest me the entire time. There's nothing going on there so they were hunting me down the entire time. Davidson was pulled over by Manlius police in Fayetteville, N. Y., in August. He was not charged but his passenger and friend, fellow comedian-actor Joseph "Joey" Gay Jr., was charged with a violation for unlawful possession of marijuana and a fourth-degree felony for possession of concentrated cannabis. Joey Gay pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of marijuana earlier this month in a plea deal; he paid 225 in cash in fines. Davidson suggested he was targeted in CNY because of his celebrity status. He was spotted in public frequently during breaks in filming, including at Destiny USA with superstar singer Ariana Grande (his then-fiancee) and local restaurants like Dinosaur Bar-B-Que and Funk 'n Waffles. Davidson and Gay also performed at a charity comedy show at the former A. Zogg Middle School in Liverpool, now the home of filmmaker Jeremy Garelick's Syracuse Studios and film school. Town of Manlius Police Capt. Kevin Schafer said its officers do not target anyone: When we stop a vehicle, we don't know who's in it. Davidson was driving and pulled over for violating vehicle and traffic law, Schafer confirmed to and The Post-Standard on Tuesday. A national release date has not been set for "Big Time Adolescence. The film is currently seeking theatrical distribution, according to USA Today. Scroll through to see highlights from the reviews of "Big Time Adolescence. Free online big time adolescence images. PLOT: Sixteen year old Mo (Griffin Gluck) doesnt have many friends his own age. But, he does have a best friend in twenty-three-year-old Zeke (Pete Davidson) his sisters former boyfriend. Far from a good influence, the nonetheless charming Zeke treats Mo more like a contemporary than the kid he actually is, getting the both of them into a whole world of trouble. REVIEW: Weve all had a Zeke in our lives - he's that older kid who always seemed just a bit cooler, smarter, funnier and charismatic than anyone else. They were the guys who moved effortlessly between social cliques in high school, being friends with everyone from the jocks to the nerds, and who seemed to vanish after high school. Expertly played by Pete Davidson, Zeke is shown to be a perpetual teenager, spending most of his days smoking weed and drinking beer with his fellow layabouts (including Colson Baker aka Machine Gun Kelly. Like most of the real-world Zekes, hes not a bad guy per se, hes just a thoroughly unambitious, irresponsible one. We see him give the impressionable Mo booze and drugs, but you never doubt his affection for the younger man, even when he talks him into becoming a defacto drug dealer for his high schools weekly parties. The movie, written and directed by Jason Orley, relies completely on Davidsons performance, even if its really “American Vandal”s Griffin Gluck whos the actual lead. If you hadnt been able to buy Zekes essential goodness and charisma, the movie would have fallen apart. Here, more than ever, its clear Davidson has that X-factor that makes stars, even if hes such a live wire on the screen you cant help but worry for his own well-being off camera, given that he seems to be living such a crazy, gossip-filled life. He really has that seed of unpredictability, but also so much heart that you cant help but hope Mo somehow finds a place for Zeke in his life even after he outgrows him. Davidson is so likable that you buy Mos folks (including Jon Cryer sporting a cool shaved head) not demanding their son cut him out of his life. They know hes bad, but they also know he cares about their son. Orleys made a pretty likable, mainstream film (under the American Teen banner - a new outfit designed to make high school set comedies. Imagine it as the kind of movie John Hughes might have made had to be been give his movies R-ratings, with Gluck fresh-faced and likable. However, the movie is at its best when centered on Zeke and his buddies, and when it was over I still wanted to know what happened to them further down the line - the mark of a well-written/well-acted comedy. I imagine BIG TIME ADOLESCENCE will for sure appeal to Pete Davidson fans, but even if hes not your cup of tea, give this a shot. It reveals theres more to him than what you see on SNL, and if anyone was going to break out and be the next Adam Sandler or something, Davidson would have my bet.

Free online big time adolescence video. Free online big time adolescence test. January 28, 2019 6:51PM PT Pete Davidson plays a charming lout who makes a teenager his buddy in an okay coming-of-age movie that needed more laughs or more depth. Theres a long-standing Hollywood tradition of comic characters (the vast majority, but not all, played by stars of “Saturday Night Live”) who are patently disreputable anti-social f—ups. Its the comedy as rock ‘n roll school of bad behavior, and its exemplars are legend: John Belushi turning wreckage into blissed-out anarchy in “National Lampoons Animal House, ” Bill Murray and his jabbering slob irony in everything from “Meatballs” to “St. Vincent, ” Will Ferrells destructive moronic narcissists, Jim Carreys media-wired lunatics, the revenge-of-the nerd horndog teen partiers of “Superbad. ” So when you first see Pete Davidson in “ Big Time Adolescence, ” where he plays a druggie wastrel loser who, from his look to his attitude, is very Pete Davidson (the forest of tattoos, the platinum hair, the dark-circled popping eyes and teeth-baring sexy chimpanzee smile, the stoned spin he puts on words like dude and sick and word) you naturally assume that hes one of those characters: an outrageous homeboy douche were going to be laughing with, rather than at. He is, maybe slightly. Yet the movie isnt actually that kind of comedy. Davidson plays Zeke, who is 23 years old but still living like the total rudderless dropout he is. He works (barely) at a discount appliance store, sleeps with his ex-girlfriends, and sells drugs to high-school kids on the side; his idea of ambition is to quit his day job and sell more drugs, so that he wont have to work at all. Hes like a blank-generation version of Matthew McConaugheys Wooderson in “Dazed and Confused”: a former high-school stud whos still clinging to the part, even though its starting to look shabby on him. Zeke doesnt have a care in the world, but thats only because he doesnt care about anything, least of all himself. He does, however, have a best friend: Mo (Griffin Gluck) the 16-year-old hero of the movie. Mo is a relatively straight and together kid (with his keen intelligence, sleek good looks, and Howdy Doody haircut, he seems like sophomore class president material) but he becomes Zekes protégé in hanging out and chasing kicks. Zeke drives the kid around, giving him weed, booze, and coarse misogynistic advice in how to get laid, then slipping him increasingly large quantities of drugs to sell at parties — and if that sounds like a slightly inappropriate thing for him to do, it is. Yet to Mo, Zeke is simply the quintessence of cool. (Thats why Mo will do anything he says. And Zeke likes hanging out with Mo because thats how he can keep feeling cool. Davidson, as always, gets you chuckling at the blasé bluntness of his punk self-absorption; he gives a blithely honed and stylish youth-sociopath performance. Yet “ Big Time Adolescence, ” which is less a wild comedy than a relatively straight coming-of-age movie sprinkled with (mild) chuckles, has no illusions about Zeke as a character. He doesnt represent a force of disreputable vitality. Hes just a f—up. And frankly, I wish hed been something more: the kind of character who slays us with his forbidden hilarity — or, barring that, the sort of layered troublemaker who would have taken Davidson at least one level deeper than his comfort zone. But no, hes just there, with no arc and not all that much surprise. Hes the charming lout next door who Mo idolizes and has to outgrow, but the movie would have been more of an adventure if we didnt completely see through Zeke from minute one. I have no idea how autobiographical “Big Time Adolescence” is (or isnt) but Jason Orley, the first-time filmmaker who wrote and directed it, certainly makes it feel like youre watching the anecdotal memoir version of a sowing-your-wild-oats teen flick. Mo sneaks out of the house, blows off his well-meaning but ineffectual father (Jon Cryer) and spends as much time as possible hanging out with high-school seniors, because he thinks thats where the action is. Zeke isnt his only bad influence; so is Jon (Thomas Barbusca) his squirmy classmate in coiffed hair, who gains entrée to a “pimps and hos” party by promising to bring alcohol. The two of them go, and the party looks every bit as depressing as it sounds. Even the “pimps and hos” concept just turns out to be a thin excuse for another routine basement drink-a-thon. The atmosphere of slovenly teen hedonism is authentic, and Orley has a filmmakers instinct for how to let the rhythms of a scene play out. At the party, Mo meets a girl, played by the vibrant Oona Laurence, whos as smart (and cute) as he is, and after gliding past a few getting-to-know-you sarcasms, the two begin to mesh. The connection is real, but Zeke has given Mo his secret for how to win a girl, and it turns out to be his boilerplate version of a “neg”: Lavish all this attention on her, he explains, make a point of pampering her with her favorite latte, and then, just as shes getting hooked…ghost her! She wont know what hit her, and when you finally return, shell be yours. Pete Davidson delivers this loathsome advice with a conviction thats rather unnerving, and Mos attempt to follow it turns out to be the plot of the movie. Boy meets girl, boy woos girl, boy (following Zekes genius counsel. treats girl like trash, then boy discovers that winning her back isnt really so easy. Laurence is like the young Ally Sheedy with more moxie, and Gluck, who never seems less than genuine, registers Mos deep dismay at seeing how wrong he was. But you wish there was more to the movie than that. “Big Time Adolescence” isnt bad, but its a trifle. It kept making me think of teen movies with central characters who go rogue in major ways that had more bite and surprise to them, like “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” or “Edge of Seventeen” or “mid90s. ” The wild card here is supposed to be Pete Davidson. Yet how wild a card can he be if he never seems like anything but a pest pretending to be a rock star? V. Zogg Middle School (more recently the Liverpool Community Church) appears as it did upon construction in 1928. But inside, rooms within the Zogg Building have transformed into a dorm room, a hospital wing, editing suites and storage for old movie sets. Since Hollywood writer and director Jeremy Garelick purchased the building in 2017, film production company American High has produced three films in the Zogg Building, now called Syracuse Studios. The newest film - titled "Big Time Adolescence. is currently in filming on premise and around the Syracuse area. The film brought to town Saturday Night Live's Pete Davidson (along with fiancee Ariana Grande) rapper and actor Machine Gun Kelly, Sydney Sweeney and Jon Cryer. Amidst filming, co-owner of American High and a producer for "Big Time Adolescence. Will Phelps, gave an inside look at Syracuse Studios and the beginnings of what Garelick and Phelps hope will become a thriving film industry in Syracuse. Enter the doors of American High and interns - in essence students of Garelick's emerging film school - rush around the halls with headsets attached to their ears. Many of the interns come from Syracuse University. Down the line, some will be hired officially by Garelick, who hopes to educate students as well as locals in order to build a network of talent in the area for future American High productions. American High will also host classes taught by Garelick or visiting Hollywood filmmakers. To the left of the main entrance, a small room has been converted into the reception room of a doctor's office. Though Phelps couldn't say much about the upcoming film, we do know that "Big Time Adolescence" will feature scenes at a doctor's office or hospital room. As Syracuse Studios creates more small sets within the old school building, it will become possible for a variety of movies to be shot there, said Phelps. "Big Time Adolescence" filming has also taken the crew to local locations like Sylvan Beach. Instead of a patient room, a door off the doctor's office reception room leads to an editing suite. There, Waldemar Centeno, a Los Angeles television and film editor who has worked on shows like ABC's "The Goldbergs. edits scenes shot the previous day. On the walls, crew members have signed the titles of films made by American High so far. Currently, Holly Slept Over. Banana Split" and "Looks that Kill" are written in sharpie. American High will film three more films this year, Phelps said. Though the active sets at Syracuse Studios are off-limits to outsiders, Phelps did offer a glimpse into the world of movie making by showing off the behind-the-scenes work. In the basement of Syracuse Studios, the props storage room looks as full and as eclectic as a Salvation Army. Furniture, books, games, room decor, toys - anything you can think of - fill the room. In the next room over, American High stores its large, wooden set flats from previous movies for possible future use. In the upcoming months and years, American High hopes to expand operations from Syracuse Studiosn - like turning the former gymnasium into a complete sound stage. If "Big Time Adolescence" hits the big screen in the future, Liverpool and Syracuse locals will recognize the exterior of the Zogg Building and the scenes shot around town. The stars of the film have already drawn attention to the area with sightings at local favorites like Funk 'N Waffles, Dinosaur BBQ and Wegmans. Pete Davidson and Machine Gun Kelly even recorded a music video while in town with a shout out to Syracuse at the beginning. Phelps said that the cast of the movie have hit it off - which feels like a testament to Garelick's vision for the Zogg Building and Syracuse Studios. "Pete's insanely funny, he's like a young Adam Sandler. Sydney Sweeney is incredibly talented and Griffin Gluck is insanely talented. Phelps said. "They've got an insane chemistry - it's like the movie is coming to life. They're hanging out on the weekends and they're all kind of taking on the persona of their characters. Bryan Steffy Getty Images It's been a weird year for Pete Davidson. On one hand, he became one of the biggest stars of Saturday Night Live 's modern era, but at the price of a whirlwind relationship with Ariana Grande that became the stuff of tabloid fodder. That led to a scary Instagram post and Davidson quitting social media. After all the drama of 2018, Davidson has emerged at Sundance with a new movie called Big Time Adolescence, which early reviews are saying shows off Davidson's legit acting chops. As Sundance describes the movie: Its funny: humans have been growing up for a really long time, but somehow we still suck at it. Just look at sixteen-year-old Mo (Griffin Gluck. Hes bright enough and comes from a good family, yet his best friend is … Zeke (Pete Davidson. Yeah, that Zeke—the aggressively unmotivated college dropout who used to date Mos older sister. Mos well-meaning dad (Jon Cryer) is less-than-thrilled by this state of affairs. His sister? Woof. So instead of spending his days readying himself for adulthood, young Mo is getting a very different sort of schooling. Zeke favors a nontraditional style with practicals in dealing, partying, and ghosting. Academia this aint. A still from Big Time Adolescence, the move that could transform Pete Davidson into a serious leading man. Sundance After its Sundance debut this week, critics are taking a serious look at Davidson as a leading actor. Natalia Winkelman at the Daily Beast said the movie turns Davidson into a "bona fide movie star. She writes: The films biggest draw is Davidson, who, as lazy, zany Zeke, shines center stage. Its a relief to see the comedian give such a natural performance given his rollercoaster year. USA Today 's Patrick Ryan writes that "If his Adolescence performance is indicative of work to come, this won't be Davidson's last trip to the Park City fest. And the Hollywood Reporter 's John DeFore writes, Pete Davidson is so on-target you might forget all the lines he's flubbed on Saturday Night Live. " It's high praise for Davidson's first lead-role outing (prior to this, he was impressive with a small part in Set It Up) and it comes just as The Hollywood Reporter said on Tuesday that Davidson will star in an untitled comedy directed by Judd Apatow, his first since 2015's Trainwreck with Amy Schumer. And it sounds like the film wasn't at all fun to film. Davidson told Variety that when they were filming in Syracuse, New York, he kept getting in trouble with the police. “It sucked, ” Davidson said. “The whole town of Syracuse blows. Lets be honest, they just found out I was there and tried to arrest me the whole time. The cops, because theres nothing going on there, they were hunting me down the whole time. They tried to arrest me for bringing business to your town. Never again, Syracuse. ” Well, at least he made it through. Meanwhile, after returning to SNL following his social media scare, Davidson and John Mulaney's bit reviewing films went viral. It's starting to look like Davidson's 2019 will be much better than his 2018. The school, now known as Syracuse Studios, is used for shooting high school-set comedies under Garelicks production company American High, as well as a film school for aspiring filmmakers and actors. A release date has not been announced for “Big Time Adolescence. Deadline reports the film is still eyeing a theatrical release, likely before it begins streaming on Hulu. Davidson, who returns to “SNL” for his sixth season later this month, appears to be using “Big Time Adolescence” as a launching point for a film career. He reportedly shot a new star vehicle directed by Judd Apatow this past summer and is in talks for a role in James Gunns upcoming “Suicide Squad" sequel. Davidson, however, may have lost some fans in CNY after he called Syracuse “trash” and claimed that local police targeted him during the film production. “It sucked. The whole town of Syracuse blows, ” the 25-year-old comedian told Variety in January. “To be honest, they just found out I was there and tried to arrest me the entire time. Theres nothing going on there so they were hunting me down the entire time. Davidson was pulled over by Manlius police in Fayetteville, N. Y., in August. He was not charged but his passenger and friend, fellow comedian-actor Joseph “Joey” Gay Jr., was charged with a violation for unlawful possession of marijuana and a fourth-degree felony for possession of concentrated cannabis. Joey Gay pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of marijuana in a plea deal; he paid 225 in cash in fines. Davidson suggested he was targeted because of his celebrity status. He was spotted in public frequently during breaks in filming, including at Destiny USA with superstar pop singer Ariana Grande (his then-fiancee) and local restaurants like Dinosaur Bar-B-Que and Funk 'n Waffles. Davidson and Gay also performed at a charity comedy show at Syracuse Studios. Town of Manlius Police Capt. Kevin Schafer said its officers do not target anyone: “When we stop a vehicle, we dont know whos in it. ” Davidson was driving and pulled over for violating vehicle and traffic law, Schafer told and The Post-Standard. Davidson attempted to return to Syracuse last month for two shows at the Funny Bone at Destiny USA, but canceled days prior due to “unforeseen circumstances. American High is about to begin production on its sixth movie in Liverpool and the surrounding area. The title, cast and director have not been announced, but recent casting calls have sought vintage cars, hundreds of extras and a “special dairy cow. American High also shot “Holly Slept Over, ” “Banana Split, ” “Looks That Kill” and “Sid is Dead" over the past two years. American High co-founder Jeremy Garelick, meanwhile, is set to write and direct a separate high-profile project: A reboot of “Look Whos Talking, ” the 1989 movie that starred Kirstie Alley and John Travolta with Bruce Willis as the voice of a babys inner monologue. Much about Pete Davidsons unique appeal, as “SNL” comedian and celebrity, has to do with his smirk: a slender half-moon with naughty connotations and an undercurrent of sadness. “ Big Time Adolescence ” provides the first indication of how that smile can tell a story. As the 22-year-old Zeke, the listless college dropout who becomes the rambunctious older-brother figure to 16-year-old Mo (Griffin Gluck) Davidson projects an outward confidence even as the movie makes it clear that his character is full of it. The strength of “Big Time Adolescence” stems from Mo waking up to the real intentions behind that smile. As coming-of-age stories about wayward teens go, writer-director Jason Orleys debut is a sturdy, endearing portrait of youth in revolt that takes few surprising turns. But the two actors sell their dynamic well enough to inject the story with palpable authenticity despite the familiar premise. As Mos handy opening voiceover explains, he first got to know Zeke as the cool boyfriend to Mos older sister; when that relationship fell apart, Mo swooped in, drawn to Zeke and his fellow partying twentysomething pals more than the comparatively drab possibilities of high school social life. Theres no doubt that Zekes hedonistic lifestyle represents a threat to Mos future, but that sense of danger is exactly what draws Mo in. Orleys best sequence comes in the credits, with a slo-mo depiction of the duo drinking beers with an adult crowd after dark, establishing the euphoric escape Mo finds in Zekes carefree life. The rest of the movie revolves around whether Mo will wake up to the danger Zeke poses to Mos own future. Orleys script lingers on Zekes gleeful vulgarity and cocksure attitude, as well as Mos willingness to take it at face value. “You gotta jerk off before you fuck a girl, ” Zeke advises the teen, driving down a suburban road while letting Mo hold the wheel. That might sound innocuous enough, but its only a matter of time before Zeke begins to impact Mo in more perilous fashion, handing him weed and other drugs to sell at underage parties under the guise that it will make the pariah more popular. For a while, it seems to work, as Mos sudden burst of confidence allows him to lure classmate Sophie (Oona Laurence) into a charming date night, which culminates with a late-night drinking session at Zekes home. Mo falls into a long line of horny white kids pursuing first love and geeking out over his first kiss, but “Big Time Adolescence” spikes that formula with Zekes smarmy commentary and destructive behavior. When Mo tries to tell Zeke and his friends about the encounter, they dont just haze the poor kid — they give him a tattoo. Needless to say, these circumstances lead Mos dad (Jon Cryer, in a sensitive turn) to confront Zeke on multiple equations, as the older man attempts to determine whether the wild-eyed reprobate is a role model or simply a glorified babysitter. His logical concerns strike Mo as overblown, but its only a matter of time before their antics lead to bigger trouble: After a car crash leads police officers to investigate the high schools drug-dealing problem, Mo becomes an object of interest and his allegiance to Zeke becomes an open question. “Big Time Adolescence” heads toward a series of complications in a straightforward manner, as if playing “Superbad” Madlibs. It comes as no great surprise when Mo angers family and friends alike, while growing more skeptical of Zeke right on schedule. Once it established its ensemble, the movie hits a series of familiar beats. And while its fun to watch Zeke hang out with his boisterous crowd of likeminded partiers — including an amusing but underutilized Colson Baker (aka Machine Gun Kelly) — the movie ultimately feels too formulaic and safe to match the wild energy they bring to the room. Ultimately, “Big Time Adolescence” works best as a two-hander between a young man who pretends to have wisdom to share, and his disciples eagerness to soak it all in. Gluck, best known at this point for “American Vandal, ” shows real potential for playing stone-faced introverts keen on finding an outlet for their latent desires — but the movies less fixated on his struggle than the way it reflects back on Zekes self-destructive nature. Davidsons first major movie performance doesnt give him a big moment, but its littered with many engaging smaller ones rich with implications about his aimless trajectory. Orleys sharp visual style draws a telling contrast to Zekes sloppy way in the world. Visiting a museum, the pair gaze at an abstract painting that Zeke writes off as “scribbles and dicks, ” before concluding, “Theres more to life than scribbles and dicks. ” That sort of inane observation — both crass and genuine in its quest for meaning — epitomizes the essence of a sturdy dramedy that makes up for its lack of depth in scrappy charm, and a willingness to admit that sometimes the best characters are ones destined to screw everything up.
